Friends of Epworth Race Day tipped as a winner

The annual Friends of Epworth Race Day was held on Saturday 16 June at Moonee Valley Racing Club.

400 guests attended the fundraising event and an incredible $50,000 was raised on the day.  These funds will be directly used toward innovation projects at Epworth via the Epworth Medical Foundation.

Group Chief Executive, Dr Lachlan Henderson gave an official welcome and MC female jockey Casey Bruce led the day’s proceedings. Guests heard from special guest speaker former jockey Brenton Primmer who took a fall in Warrnambool in 2006 and has been undergoing rehabilitation at Epworth.

Brenton and his mother Rosie talked about how grateful they were to the rehabilitation team at Epworth for bringing Brenton back from a near-death experience to live independently and hold down a part-time job in the racing industry.

Auctioneer former President of the Epworth Board of Directors, Rod Fitzroy led an active live auction for two items including an ultimate behind the scenes experience at Moonee Valley Racing Club offered by Chairman of the Australian Jockey’s Association Des O’Keeffe.

Fashions on the field judges Special Events Committee members, Paige Fitzroy, Toni Joel and Veron Tang had a hard time choosing the day’s finalists. Ladies fashions on the field was won by former Epworth nurse, Danielle O’Brien and the men’s fashion stakes was won by Epworth orthopaedic surgeon Sam Patten.

The Race Day has been an annual event in the Friends of Epworth calendar for over eight years and in this time it has grown from 50 to 400 guests.  During the day guests enjoyed a three course meal in the Champions Room and watched the nine sponsored races with interest.

This exciting day was delivered under the leadership of Friends of Epworth President Gail Roche, Secretary Ronda Jenkins and their hard working committee.  Thank you to the team for their great fundraising efforts at this and other functions held throughout the year for Epworth. Thanks also to everyone who attended this special event.
