Donations are used to purchase as much as half of the world-class, state-of-the-art equipment in our hospitals, to ensure our patients receive the best in medical and technological advances to aid their recovery.
Case study: microsurgery microscope
At Christmas in 2014, we asked our donors to help us purchase the world’s leading Microsurgery Microscope, to provide reconstructive surgery for cancer patients.
Our donors responded with overwhelming generosity, and the microsurgery microscope has been installed in the Oncology Ward at Epworth Freemasons.
This means that patients at Epworth can now choose to receive reconstructive surgery, such as breast reconstruction for breast-cancer patients, from the same team that has treated their cancer and cared for them from the very beginning.
“Breast reconstruction after cancer-related mastectomy is understandably becoming part of the overall treatment of breast cancer and survivorship,” says Epworth plastic surgeon Ajay Chauhan. “This is especially the case in tissues that have been previously treated with radiotherapy, as their ability to heal is diminished.”
